The western world claims that it has achieved freedom, especially the US which use “freedom” as a national motto, but what kind of freedom is this? Freedom to eat what we want?, drink what we want? date who we want? Is that all? We are indeed free to have fun, travel, etc… but this narrow freedom is painfully unsatisfactory. Isaiah Berlin defined two types of freedoms in his essay “Two concepts of Liberty” in 1958. To cut a long story short, positive freedom is being free to do something; while negative freedom is being free from something/somenone. You could of course say that we are free to eat, drink, etc… but is this really doing something?
